Coronavirus note: Together we can maintain a covid-safe environment for guests and changeover staff and local residents. Please follow both government guidance and common sense on social distancing and regular hand washing.

You can book ahead in full confidence that in the event of there being government advice against self catering holidays in England at the time of your holiday we will happily refund or postpone (you choose which). SAFETY FIRST: if it isn't safe to proceed, you can cancel with no penalty. If your booking is via e.g. TripAdvisor then different terms apply.

Enjoy your holiday with the confidence that your holiday home is covid-safe: The house is always kept scrupulously clean by our excellent handover team, and is spacious enough to be a low-density low-intensity habitation. In addition to our normal cleaning protocols, our cleaners' preparation checklist nowadays also includes cleaning some surfaces (e.g. door handles, doorbell, oven knobs, taps, toilet flush buttons, toilet seats) with bleach which then rapidly evaporates without leaving any odour. Fresh air and sunshine helps too. From your front or back door you have ready access to the wide open fields and beaches of this beautiful area. You'll find it easy to keep 2m (or a cow's length as they say locally) from strangers. If booking both houses,
  • At the back door there is a no-touch hand sanitiser dispenser ... hold your hands under the dispenser to get a squirt of 70% alcohol hand sanitiser.
  • In the house there will be 1 hand sanitiser and 1 anti-viral spray bottle for your use.
  • We are spraying safe antiviral spray on the pillow protectors and mattress covers before putting clean bedding on.
  • We are cleaning then disinfecting high touch areas such as bathrooms, door handles, taps, remote controllers, telephones, banisters, and light switches.
  • We are using two different sets of cushions, for alternating weeks, so you will not be using the same cushions as the previous guests.
  • From your front or back door you have ready access to the wide open fields and beaches of this beautiful area. You'll find it easy to maintain 2m (or a cow's length as they say locally) social distancing.
Government guidance 24/06/2020 says that from 04/03/2020 you and your household (including your support bubble) can stay overnight away from your home with members of one other household (and support bubble).

If booking The Crescent, the double-house layout allows more options than in most other large houses in choosing how distanced your households are from each other.   At The Crescent you have the option to socially distance the two houses (max 4 households) from each other, and safely to be all together in the wide open spaces nearby.

Complying with the letter of the law is not enough - you also need to comply with the spirit of the law. You are very welcome to book our houses if you will be acting to minimise the risk of transmission of coronavirus.

Welcome!

mortehoe crescent buttery cromlech panorama

The Buttery and Cromlech House are two self-catering holiday homes in the wonderful village of Mortehoe, North Devon. Near to Woolacombe and Croyde surfing beaches and surrounded by National Trust land, Mortehoe has something for everyone at all seasons of the year.

  • Two large houses carefully restored and modernized in 2011 by architect-owner.
  • Views to sea and to fields, but in the heart of an amazing village with 3 excellent pubs.
  • Perfectly located near shore & moor in the wonderful village of Mortehoe, near fabulous coastal paths, moorland walks, local swimming beach and Woolacombe surfing.
  • Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB ), Unesco Biosphere reserve, conservation area, surrounded by National Trust farmland.
  • Near to Mortehoe and Woolacombe Golf Club, Willingcott Golf Club, Saunton Sands and others.
  • In high season we normally rent out for multiples of 7 days, with Friday changeover. But we are often able to be flexible.

We bought this former 10-bedroom double-sized house in the village's Victorian 'crescent' in July 2010.

The Buttery (5 bedrooms) and Cromlech House (4 bedrooms) are now our own much-loved family holiday homes and are also available for rent. The two houses are now used as large self-contained properties, and also used together as a 9-bedroom unit called 'The Crescent'.

These are capacious houses. Rent is per property not per occupant, but the equivalent per-person-per-night rates can be less than £10 per-person-per-night in low season for a weekly rental. In high season the rents adjust for higher demand.

If you choose Mortehoe for your holiday we aim to help make it your best holiday ever!
